Be Prepared!

Time to take a few extra precautions while driving when adverse road and weather conditions are present. Automobile accidents can lead to property damage and even worse, bodily injury.
Follow our TOP FIVE TIPS for safe driving this holiday season:
1. Leave plenty of space between you and other drivers. This is #1 for a very good reason! Rear end collisions, no matter how minor, can lead to bodily injuries and the easiest way to avoid this is by leaving space.
2. Replace your windshield wipers if they are old or the rubber is dry.
3. Drive alert, which means NO using your phone or eating, especially when it’s raining.
4. Make sure your tires have proper tread. Not sure if they do? Look up the “penny test” to learn more.
5. Plan your route ahead of time to avoid last minute maneuvers that may lead to quick braking, catching other drivers off guard.

What are you reading?

As a lot of you know, I’m a pretty avid reader.  I always have 2-3 books going at once.  One is always what I call a “junk mystery.”   I always have a Chiropractic/ Rehab book.  But the last is probably the most important.  I always am reading something good, or positive to help keep my mind right.  The mind is a trickster.  If you let it, it will let you think less than positive thoughts.  And, while I know the world can be a pretty scary place right now, we need to be “mindful” of the negativity that we read. I’ve read two exceptional books in the last month, that really “spoke” to me.  I’m gonna pass them on to you.

The first is Mindset….The New Psychology of Success, by Carol S. Dweck. What’s it about?  How to fulfill your potential in parenting, business, school, and relationships with a “growth mindset.”  A fixed mindset limits achievement. It fills people’s minds with interfering thoughts, it makes effort disagreeable, and it leads to inferior learning strategies.

The second book I actually read twice.  I bought it on kindle and then went back and got a hard copy so I could underline and highlight…It’s that good! The Slight Edge, by Jeff Olson. What’s it about?  How doing the little things, consistently will make big things happen.  Too many times we fall just short of our goals due to inconsistent habits.  Many of the habits that will get us our goals are simple to do, but they are also simple not to do.

I make a point of reading something positive every day for a minimum of 10 minutes.  It puts my mind right.  What are you reading?  I’d like to know so I can add it to my list.

Be Happy!

I came across a gem this weekend.  ”The 5 simple things you can do every day, that if you do them consistently over time, will make you significantly, noticeably, measurably happier.”  This was from The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor.

1.  Each morning, write down three things your’re grateful for.  Three new things every day.

2.  Journal for 2 minutes a day about a positive experience you’ve had over the past 24 hours.

3.  Meditate daily.

4.  Do a random act of kindness over the coarse of each day.  It can be as simple as an e-mail of praise or thanks.

5.  Exercise for 15 minutes daily.  Studies show that exercise is as powerful as any anti-depressants and  safer.

Pick one.  Start today and if done faithfully over the next 3 weeks, only 21 days, you will have a happy, healthy habit.  Then add another habit!

HBOT Therapy and Concussions

I just ran across a great article on concussions and how to treat them.  It reminded me of a young athlete, I’ll call him “Sam,” that we treated a couple of years ago.  He was a football player who had three concussions in one year! Sam was having migraines, problems concentrating and articulating what he was thinking.  He saw a neurologist and had a SPECT scan that showed moderate brain damage in the temporal lobe.  He started on a protocol of 40 treatments of HBOT (hyperbaric oxygen therapy) and brain healing, anti-oxident supplements.

Within the first month of treatment, he noticed that he “could explain things better,” and he was “no longer having problems processing information.”  After the treatments, he re-took his SATs (had taken them prior to starting his brain healing treatments) and scored 200+ points higher without any other prep class or studying.  The higher score made the difference of his being accepted to the college that he really wanted to attend.
