New Year’s Resolution

Dear Friends,

It has been two weeks since New Year’s Day.  Have the changes you set out to make stuck?  Sometimes we need to make it simple.

For me, I made a resolution to read something positive or in my field at least 10 minutes a day (something that either helps me be a better person or a better doctor),  and then to journal three positive or good things that happened throughout the day.  I find that I’m more mindful, peaceful, and get more done with a little journaling.

If your resolution included something like to get healthier or start an exercise program, the little steps may be to start, such as walking 15 minutes a day or do a little food prep on Sundays, so you can eat meals at home for the week.

And if its been a while since you’ve been in for a tune-up, give our office a call and we will help you start of the New Year right with a spine and nervous system that’s in alignment with your goals.

See you soon,

Dr. Teri

October News

October is my favorite month!
Hi Friends!
I love October, Fall and Halloween.  We are starting off the month of October with “Mind Your Head.” A reminder that all athletes need a pre-concussion baseline test to later determine if a concussion has occurred and to help assess treatment and severity.  Our FDA approved testing process will help to compare pre-season to post-season trauma.
Call the office to schedule you or your kids test today.

Just a heads up…the office will be closed October 12-17. Please make your appointments accordingly.

This coming up Saturday, October 7th, still has some massage and adjustment openings left.  They go fast though, so if you want one give us a call.  We also have massage therapy available Monday-Thursday from 3-6.

Costume contest and Trick-o-Treat/Open House on Saturday, October 28th from 9-11 A.M.  We will have coffee and snacks for all the Ghouls and Ghosts in your family.

Lastly, what are you reading?  My current read is “High Performance Habits, How Extraordinary People Become that Way,” by Brendon Burchard.  I just started it last weekend, so I am holding off on voicing an opinion until I get a little further into it.

Happy Monday!  See you soon.

Women and Concussions

As many of you know, I have become obsessed with the neurology and anatomy of what happens when someone has a concussion or traumatic brain injury (TBI) and the best ways to regain balance and function. ESPN magazine has a great article on the differences between male and female athlete’s symptoms and healing following a trauma to the head. Here’s the link:

Want  to learn more about head trauma and how to protect athletes from further injury???  Join us at the next Concussion Roulette Workshop-August 2nd at 6:30 PM.  RSVP at 714-779-2318.

How Does Chiropractic Work?

Many people seek chiropractic care when their back goes out or their neck tightens up. But how does this form of care actually work? What are the benefits of receiving chiropractic care for nerve dysfunction compared with other healthcare options? Let’s take a look!

First, let’s discuss how the nervous system “works.” We have three divisions of the nervous system: the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems. The central nervous system (CNS) includes the brain and spinal cord, and it’s essentially the main processing portion of the nervous system. The spinal cord is like a multi-lane highway that brings information to the brain for processing (sensory division) and returns information back to the toes, feet, legs, and upper extremities from which the information originated (motor division). For example, hiking on a mountain trail or simply walking requires constant input to and from the CNS so we can adjust our balance accordingly and not fall. These “sensory-motor pathways” are essential and allow us to complete our daily tasks in an efficient, safe manner as information is constantly bouncing back and forth between the brain and the rest of the body.

The peripheral nervous system (PNS) includes a similar sensory/motor “two-way street” system relaying information back and forth from our toes/feet/legs and fingers/hands/arms to the spinal cord (CNS). And if this isn’t complicated enough, we also have “reflexes” that, for example, allow us to QUICKLY pull our hand away from a hot stove to minimize burning our fingers.

Reflexes allow the information to “skip” the brain’s processing part so quicker reactions can occur. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) includes the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions that basically “run” our automatic (organ) functions like breathing, heart rate, digestion, hormonal output, and more. There is constant communication between the ANS, PNS, and CNS that allow us to function in a normal, balanced way… unless something disrupts them.

There are obvious conditions that interfere with this communication process that include (but are not limited to) diabetes (with neuropathy), frost bitten or burned fingers, peripheral nerve damage from conditions like carpal/cubital tunnel syndromes, thoracic outlet syndrome, and/or pinched nerves in the neck, mid-back, low-back spinal regions, as well as conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS), Guillain-Barre Syndrome, after a stroke (spinal cord or brain), and after trauma with resulting fractures where nerve, spinal cord, and/or brain damage can occur. These are “obvious” reasons for delayed or blocked neurotransmission.

There are many other less obvious injuries or conditions that can result in faulty neuromotor patterns and nerve transmission of which chiropractic services can benefit. The “subluxation complex” is a term some chiropractors use to describe the compromised nerve transmission that may occur if a nerve is compressed or irritated due to faulty bone or joint position along the nerve’s course. Reducing such nerve compression typically allows for a restoration of function. A good illustration of this is a patient who suffers from a herniated disk in the neck with numbness and tingling down the arm to the hand. The goal of treatment (for all healthcare professionals) is to remove the pinch of the nerve.

To realize this goal, doctors of chiropractic utilize spinal manipulation and mobilization in addition to other non-surgical, non-drug approaches that may include exercises, nutritional advice, home-care such as a cervical traction unit, and other anti-inflammatory measures (ice, modalities like low level and class IV laser, electric stimulation, pulsed magnetic field, and more). Given the minimal side-effect risks and well-reported benefits, it only makes sense to try chiropractic FIRST and if you’re not satisfied, your doctor will help you find the next level of care.

Concussion Relief

Testimony from a concussed guy or how my Chiropractor treated me for a concussion

A few months ago, I had an accident that caused a concussion and small brain bleed.

I was in the hospital for 2 and a half days for testing and recovery.

While in the hospital I saw a Neuro Surgeon who told me to rest for a week and that I should see a Neurologist for follow up. When I was discharged from the Hospital, I was feeling dizzy, my balance was not what it should have been and in general, I just felt ‘Off’.

I did have the follow up visit with a Neurologist, he told me to monitor my blood pressure and see him again in 6 weeks. He did not offer any suggestions for therapy or anything that I could do myself to relieve the symptoms of dizziness, and that feeling of being ‘off’. Because I had never experienced a concussion before I did not really know what things I could do to relieve those symptoms, I was wondering if I would have to live the rest of my life feeling ‘off’.

After 3 weeks of laying around and resting, my lower back was sore, so I made an appointment with my Chiropractor for an adjustment. When she found out about my concussion, she immediately advised me that I could perform some very simple exercises that would help my brain recover from the trauma associated with the concussion, get my balance back and help me get that feeling that all was well again with my body.

I started those exercises under her supervision, and lo and behold, those symptoms of feeling ‘off’ started getting better. For the past month I have been working with my Chiropractor twice a week and am starting to feel normal now. I had a follow up with my Neurologist and he cleared me to return to the Gym and I can start riding my bicycle again. I am now seeing my Chiropractor once a week and the feeling that my body is ‘off’ has gone away.

So, I am sure by now that you know my Chiropractor is Teri Wisner. I cannot say enough for how much her treatment has helped me recover from that concussion. Don’t get me wrong about my visit with the Neurologist, I respect him for the knowledge he must have, but if you want to get better from a whole body perspective, just stay with your Chiropractor, and of course, stay with Teri Wisner, she’s the best and she does know how to treat Concussion symptoms. Hmm, I wonder if she knows how to tune up my bicycle.

Benefits of Massage Therapy

What is in your stocking? This Christmas treat a family member, friend, loved one, or even yourself to a massage. Did you know that massage is helpful in so many aspects of ones life. Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress related. And perhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress. Massage Therapy is beneficial in reducing stress (especially around the holidays), pain management, enhanced sleep quality, increased circulation, reduces recovery time, reduced fatigue, and greater energy. Not only that, if you suffer from anxiety, arthritis, high or low blood pressure, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, and chronic migraines and tension headaches, massage can help regulate and balance your bodily system. Research continues to show the enormous benefits of touch—which range from treating chronic diseases, neurological disorders, and injuries, to alleviating the tensions of modern lifestyles. Getting a massage can do you a world of good. And getting massage frequently can do even more. This is the beauty of bodywork. Taking part in this form of regularly scheduled self-care can play a huge part in how healthy you’ll be and how youthful you’ll remain with each passing year. Budgeting time and money for bodywork at consistent intervals is truly an investment in your health. Consider massage appointments as a necessary piece of your health and wellness plan, and work with us to establish a treatment schedule that best meets your needs. For appointments and scheduling please contact us at 714-779-2318…. Happy Holidays and may everyone have a stress free year!

Be Prepared!

Time to take a few extra precautions while driving when adverse road and weather conditions are present. Automobile accidents can lead to property damage and even worse, bodily injury.
Follow our TOP FIVE TIPS for safe driving this holiday season:
1. Leave plenty of space between you and other drivers. This is #1 for a very good reason! Rear end collisions, no matter how minor, can lead to bodily injuries and the easiest way to avoid this is by leaving space.
2. Replace your windshield wipers if they are old or the rubber is dry.
3. Drive alert, which means NO using your phone or eating, especially when it’s raining.
4. Make sure your tires have proper tread. Not sure if they do? Look up the “penny test” to learn more.
5. Plan your route ahead of time to avoid last minute maneuvers that may lead to quick braking, catching other drivers off guard.
And be sure to stop by the office for our brochure, “Instructions to follow in Case of an Automobile Accident.”

What are you reading?

As a lot of you know, I’m a pretty avid reader.  I always have 2-3 books going at once.  One is always what I call a “junk mystery.”   I always have a Chiropractic/ Rehab book.  But the last is probably the most important.  I always am reading something good, or positive to help keep my mind right.  The mind is a trickster.  If you let it, it will let you think less than positive thoughts.  And, while I know the world can be a pretty scary place right now, we need to be “mindful” of the negativity that we read. I’ve read two exceptional books in the last month, that really “spoke” to me.  I’m gonna pass them on to you.

The first is Mindset….The New Psychology of Success, by Carol S. Dweck. What’s it about?  How to fulfill your potential in parenting, business, school, and relationships with a “growth mindset.”  A fixed mindset limits achievement. It fills people’s minds with interfering thoughts, it makes effort disagreeable, and it leads to inferior learning strategies.

The second book I actually read twice.  I bought it on kindle and then went back and got a hard copy so I could underline and highlight…It’s that good! The Slight Edge, by Jeff Olson. What’s it about?  How doing the little things, consistently will make big things happen.  Too many times we fall just short of our goals due to inconsistent habits.  Many of the habits that will get us our goals are simple to do, but they are also simple not to do.

I make a point of reading something positive every day for a minimum of 10 minutes.  It puts my mind right.  What are you reading?  I’d like to know so I can add it to my list.

Now that we have your mind straight, it is probably time to get your body straight too!.  Give us a call if you’ve been needing a tune-up to help balance the brain body connection.

See you soon!

Be Happy!

I came across a gem this weekend.  ”The 5 simple things you can do every day, that if you do them consistently over time, will make you significantly, noticeably, measurably happier.”  This was from The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor.

1.  Each morning, write down three things your’re grateful for.  Three new things every day.

2.  Journal for 2 minutes a day about a positive experience you’ve had over the past 24 hours.

3.  Meditate daily.

4.  Do a random act of kindness over the coarse of each day.  It can be as simple as an e-mail of praise or thanks.

5.  Exercise for 15 minutes daily.  Studies show that exercise is as powerful as any anti-depressants and  safer.

Pick one.  Start today and if done faithfully over the next 3 weeks, only 21 days, you will have a happy, healthy habit.  Then add another habit!
